5 Things You Should Know Before Going Silver or Platinum

Platinum and silver are two striking and trending shades, however, they’re a bit more high-maintenance and do require additional care. If you’re considering one of these tones, it’s important that you are fully aware of the required upkeep before committing to the transformation. Here Jacquie Matos shares the five things clients should know before going silver or platinum.

1. Don’t Use Drugstore Brands / Box Hair Color

As if normal box hair color wasn’t bad enough, now companies are encouraging you to think you can achieve platinum and pastel hair color with their products and in “one application!” The reality is you’ll likely need to pre-lighten multiple times before achieving fashion and platinum tones. We’re talking bleach for days and damage for years, so please don’t do lightening services at home!

The reality of these color trends is they must be done by a licensed professional. Even most ombres use a blend of techniques from hand painting to micro highlighting. This type of color application simply cannot be done without experience.

If you bring one of these fun tones to your stylist not only will s/he be able to lighten your hair in the least damaging way possible, but also give you tools to make it last!

we’re all for saving money but that $10 box color won’t feel that affordable after a $300 color correction service.

2. Toning Sessions Are A Must

Toners are only supposed to last for 4 to 6 weeks at the most, so make sure and it’s important that you come back in between lightening services to freshen up your color!

3. Use the Proper Shampoo

You’ll want to keep unwanted brassy yellow tones at bay which you can accomplish with the proper shampoo specifically formulated for platinum blonde and/or grey hair. Examples include R+Co Sunset Blvd Shampoo, REF Cool Silver Shampoo or Davines Alchemic Silver Shampoo. But be aware that many other shampoos formulated for platinum blonde and/or grey hair tend to dry out the hair, making it important to keep their usage to a minimum, ideally just once a week.

4. Don’t Put Off The Retouch

Don’t wait longer than 5 to 6 months for a touch-up. When the grow-out is too long it’s very difficult to lighten the roots to match the ends, especially if you’re a Level 5 or darker. It can also cause a lot of damage to your hair!

5. Meet Your New BFF, Dry Shampoo

Chances are this isn’t your first time getting your hair colored, so you probably already know how crucial dry shampoo is. If you are new to color, it’s worth reiterating that you should NOT wash your hair everyday. The longer you can go between washes, the better! For Dry Shampoo we recommend R+Co Spiritualized Dry Shampoo Mist and Death Valley Dry Shampoo or Cezanne Dry Shampoo.
